He probably should’ve known better than to ask Nino when Nino’s being, well, Nino.

It’s not even like it’s the first time J has given him The Glare. Or is it anything to sound the alarms about that the younger man is in such a sour mood so early in the morning.

It would’ve probably worried Masaki more if J had waved and smiled at him out in the hallway or greeted him good morning without making him feel like he’s just been cursed to the deepest bowers of hell.

If you’ve known the man for more than half your life, worked with him for practically every day of your existence, you just get used to the rough edges overtime. Learn to anticipate it, tolerate it. Forgive it.

But J cursing and whaling on the pile of old newspapers Sho has asked Masaki to bring to the green room, then kicking the loose pages around on the floor like an overgrown brat with a score to settle with the trees, well, not even Masaki is kind enough and loaded enough with blind patience to deal with such dramatics.

Especially since he’s just spent the most crucial part of his work day (the first several minutes, the ones that are supposed to set the mood for the entire day) picking Sho’s junk off the floor.

Granted the thought did make him smile for a little bit when it crossed his mind, nor would he have minded taking care of Sho’s junk on any other day, this still doesn’t make up for anything.

“What’s up with J?” he asks when he finally makes it to the green room and finds Nino stewing on the couch, game console in hand and wily mind tuning in on what his eyes won’t even bother zooming on.

“Oh, you know. The usual.”

“Usual?” Masaki sets the newspapers on the floor, loose and crumpled pages spilling over the edges. He’ll fix them up later, should Sho complain about the mess. He’ll also thoroughly enjoy blaming J for it, of course.

“That thing with Sho-chan and Leader?”

Masaki blinks, a huge chunk of his chest dropping to his stomach with a dull thud.

He’s kind of already figured out that this concerned Leader. Ever since those two began sort-of going out, then practically dating, then actually moving in together six months in, J’s moods have been in a progressively downward spiral to Evil Overlord levels.

Leader is not the sweetest partner around. The man himself can attest to that. Although he does try to make some really surprisingly romantic efforts every once in a while to ease the crease off of J’s brows, he’d just as soon cause it back again by mindlessly repeating the same offense that brought it there in the first place.

And J may not be as petty as a hormonal teenage girl who thinks she might be in love, but he’s petty enough to cause a few more strains and frictions to an already stressful relationship.

Well, it’s stressful enough for the rest of them who’s always had to watch the Leader x J love story unfold, fold in on itself, unfold again, crumple up at the core, unfold, burst into flames… You get the picture.

Masaki does admire those two for not giving up on each other. Because beyond the petty misunderstandings, seeing the world from two opposite poles, and Leader’s heck-yeah attitude constantly grating on J’s control issues, they make it work somehow.

They’ve seen something in each other that far outweighs the imperfections that everybody else sees.

Of course, the fact that Leader turned out to be unintentionally sadistic, and J an unexpected pain whore is probably just the proverbial icing in the cake.

But his own boyfriend getting involved? Well now, that’s something Masaki Aiba would never have seen coming even if it bit him in the face.

He and Sho-chan are good. Awesome good.

“Wait, what thing?!”

“Oh.” This time, Nino actually bothers turning to him, eyes wide with both guilt and sympathy. “Aiba-shi, look… I’m sorry—”

“WHAT THING?!!” He’s not usually quick to anger. Not usually one to just jump to conclusions and scream his head off in rage. But after that encounter with J, and now this, he feels he’s entitled enough to see a little red, grab Nino by the shoulders, and shake a decent explanation out of the meddling man’s bones.

“Calm down, geez!” Nino hisses, annoyed but not in the least bit threatened, which in turn just annoys Masaki even more.

They both freeze and hold their breaths.

Because for a split-second Masaki thought he’s actually just popped a vein in his head. Literally.

But then there’s another cracking pop. Then laughter. Then familiar voices from outside.

“I never did learn to do this properly, ‘Niisan.” Sho says, then a third pop. “Waaaa~! Sugeee~!!”

“Maaa~n! I can do this all day!” Another pop, then Leader opens the door and casually walks in with Sho at his heels. “All night even!”

“No wonder Jun-kun’s been in such a murderous mood since he got here!” Sho flops down on the couch beside Nino, then regards his huffing boyfriend with a frown like he’s just figuring out something’s not right. “Masaki, what are you doing?”

Masaki lets go of Nino, then drops to his knees before Sho, grabs his boyfriend’s hands before he completely loses his mind while sobbing. “Sho-chan… Nino says… He says… You and Leader…”

“…are both gonna be dead in the gutter by the end of the day,” Nino quips, flipping his DS back open.

Sho playfully slaps the sneering man’s shoulder. “Shut it! I just supplied the papers. I never told sensei over there to fold paper pop guns the entire freakin’ night!”

Masaki blinks. Blinks again. Just keeps blinking. “Huh?!”

“Folding them is one thing,” Nino says. “But popping them in the middle of the night? This old man really has it coming—”

“What’s so wrong with that?” Leader snorts from the other side of the room. “I mean, you fold them, then you pop them, right?” He cracks another pop gun to emphasize his point. “Jun-chan really needs to loosen up!”

“Perhaps in a different time zone.” Nino grabs the pop gun Sho has in his hand and cracks it in front of Masaki’s face.

Masaki pulls back. Glares. Then blinks again. “HUUUUUH?!!”

“Nino, what have you been telling him?” Sho’s voice has raised a bar with anxiety, his warm palms lightly tapping Masaki's cheeks.

“Nothing. Just that you and Leader has a thing.”

“What thing?” Leader asks, sounding lost.

“How dare you!” Sho shrieks, slapping Nino’s shoulder harder this time.

“What?! I just supplied the idea! I never told him to write an entire freakin’ novella of betrayal around it!”

Sho slaps Nino’s shoulder again.

Leader cracks another pop gun.

And Masaki screams his throat raw for both his and J’s sakes. “HUUUUUUUHHHHH?!!!”
