[Arashi] Speed Dial #1

Title: Speed Dial #1
Group/Pairing: Arashi/Yama Pair (Ohno/Sho)
Prompt: 18 Phone
Word Count: 2696
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Fluff
Summary: What’s a kid to do when a National Idol starts to unravel? Ryunosuke Kamiki gets a glimpse of a side he would never have expected of Sho Sakurai.
Disclaimer: I own nobody. Purely fictional, of course. :3
Notes: Inspired by a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] je_prompts, and a steadily growing fondness for Ryunosuke Kamiki. <3

Ryunosuke Kamiki put his glass down on the table with a sigh and stared in undisguised dread at the man passed out on the floor. The fallen idol was lying on his side, back against the wall, one arm stretched out over his head, and face just inches away from one foot of the low table in a private room in some izakaya they had somehow managed to stumble into barely half an hour ago.

He would be lying if he said the invitation did not surprise him. How many weeks had it been anyway since he asked to get invited out to drink and this man gaudily called out, “Ii yo!”, but never once mentioned the whole deal ever again?

But he should’ve really listened to his gut feel and said “no” when this man asked him to go out and drink together right after the Kazoku Game staff party ended.

That rollicking affair which bled into the late hours of the night and gave this man ample time to eat and drink and scurry around in restless, almost childlike abandon. Hopping from one table to the next, chatting, laughing, and ardently slinging his drama character’s pet phrase all over the place, like he didn’t wanna part with it just yet.

Like being Sho Sakurai, The Idol, was the furthest thing from his mind right now—

Kamiki almost broke into fits of laughter when the man began to snore. Throaty snorts of indifference that made the drool dripping from the slightly parted lips look more hilarious, almost cartoony.

Ah! He was so gonna tease this man about tonight for a very long time!

Now, if he could only figure out what to do from here...

He’d never had an image of Sho sakurai being drunk. Well, at least, not this dead-drunk. He’d always thought this man could handle his alcohol well (he’d heard things), but he guessed even the most levelheaded idol, who’d always had a perfect image, could only really drink so much—

He had been watching this man all night. It was hard not to when said man was constantly calling attention to himself—a loud remark, a boisterous laughter, a clumsy misstep or two (or three), and a constant barrage of “Ii ne!” for just about anything that anybody did.

Even as Kamiki, dressed to match Kazunari Ninomiya’s part, went on stage to perform “Endless Game” with four of his co-stars, his eyes kept wandering to the man laughing and clapping like mad at the back of the room. He more than once almost stumbled on the routine at the sight of it, which just amused Sho Sakurai even more.

It was amazing how one’s ideals of a person could change, really. Or rather, expand in rather unexpected ways where this man was concerned.

Not that Kamiki found it at all disappointing. If anything, the gap between the idol and the man fascinated him.

Except that tonight, Sho Sakurai was being particularly rowdy, chugging down alcohol like his life depended on it, that it was becoming increasingly hard not to get worried over this new, unflatteringly garish character.

He should’ve really just said “Not tonight, Sensei”. Or at the very least insisted more assertively on his idea to take their drinking to this man’s house instead. Except that this old man wouldn’t let him know where he lived.

“It’s a secret. I’m not supposed to tell,” Sakurai-san had whispered, pressing a finger to his lips before diving into the backseat of their cab, letting out peals of Yoshimoto’s high-pitched laughter when he almost knocked himself out on the glass window on the other side.

That had only been an hour ago. And eventually realizing his senpai was gonna get wasted anyway, with or without him, Kamiki had sighed and relented. If only for the sake of keeping this man safe.

Aside from the little spectacle in the cab, they had reached this place without much incident. Sho Sakurai was even able to pull off a convincingly sober front in the few minutes it took to ask for a private room, place their orders, and get settled in, that Kamiki ended up joking, “Maybe you should bash your face on glass more often, Sensei.”

They had laughed over it for a while, though he doubted he would’ve been able to get away with it if the man hadn’t been too drunk out of his mind to care.

That had only been half an hour ago. They had just been talking about cats, stars, and something about his senpai’s phone, when he thought about closing his eyes for a moment after his world began to sway uncomfortably, and when he opened them up again, Sho Sakurai was a goner.

Kamiki turned his gaze to his cup and fought the urge to take another sip. He was just getting used to the taste of alcohol so he hadn’t really been drinking much, but he couldn’t deny that he was starting to feel a little tipsy. And the feeling was getting worse now that there was nothing to distract him from it.

He was really sure though, that whatever it was they had been talking about regarding this man’s phone was important. Very important. And if he could just remember it then all of their problems would be over—

He could remember thinking how it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if this man fell into a drunken faint long before they could even finish half of their sake. He had also hoped he wouldn’t have to deal with it on his own.

He had tried to convince the man to call somebody, anybody, to come join them and add some punch to their camaraderie. While in his mind he was really just hoping for someone to come and take this man home already.

And Sho Sakurai had said something like, “I can hardly operate my phone. And the person on my speed dial is already sleeping” before emptying the newly poured sake in his glass in one gulp.

Kamiki had figured out almost instantly that whoever that person was on his senpai’s speed dial was undoubtedly the reason why he was spending the early hours of Saturday stuck with this old man.

And he had wanted to do something about it (basically, he really just wanted to go home), so he had offered to call and wake Speed Dial up.

He suspected it was Sakurai-san’s manager, whom he had interacted with more than once on the drama set and thought of as a nice and tolerant guy who cared for his senpai beyond his managerial duties. The two men were good friends, he could tell. Surely, Manager-san wouldn’t mind getting out of bed to pick his drunken idol-friend up.

But his senpai wouldn’t give him the phone.

“It’s passcode locked,” the man had said. “So it’s no use to you anyway.”

“Then tell me your passcode,” he had casually insisted.

“2526,” his senpai had unconsciously blurted out before covering his mouth and sputtering gibberish about having already changed the passcode. “This morning. No yesterday. No, last week!”

He had shaken his head and snorted, utterly amused by the rather juvenile display—

“That person won’t come anyway.”

...then crossing his brows at the suddenly biting bitterness in the man’s voice.

Kamiki had understood then what was going on. He wasn’t daft.

He knew too, that Speed Dial couldn’t possibly be Manager-san, but someone more important...

A girlfriend perhaps?

A girlfriend who had obviously been neglecting this man so much so that he seemed dead-set on drowning himself in alcohol tonight.

Kamiki had wanted to pry into it, curiosity and sake making him bolder than usual, but then the nausea just had to crawl into his head at that exact moment, making him want to just throw up and faint and be done with all of these.

Ah! Yabai!, he had screamed in his mind, closing his eyes for a moment to keep himself steady.

The next thing he knew, he was opening his eyes and seeing Sho Sakurai slumped down on the floor—

Kamiki presently looked at his cup again, vowing to keep drinking mindfully from now on. He certainly didn’t wanna end up looking like a horde of fangirls had just trampled him flat on his face, with a string of drool hanging out from his mouth.

If it had been another kid, he doubted this image would stay private. If he hadn’t been taught to respect his elders well, he would’ve pulled his phone out and snapped a photo to blackmail this man with for the rest of their natural lives.

But as it was, Ryunosuke Kamiki was a good kid. A considerate twenty-year-old who wouldn’t even take a photo just for the fun of it.

Ha! Didn’t that feel so adult-like just now?

Maybe going out with his senpai tonight wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Except that he really did need to call for help—

Kamiki eyed the jut of the phone on the pocket of his senpai’s pants and made his decision. It wouldn’t be a violation of privacy if it was the only choice he had left, right?

Besides, he would only be calling that one number.

And he most definitely wouldn’t rat his senpai out for having a girlfriend...

Not to mention it was just totally weird to ask a girl to come and pick a drunken man up, but what else could he do at this point, really?

“Yosh!” he exclaimed under his breath. He carefully crawled to the sleeping man and fished the phone out from his pocket, swiping his thumb on the screen and typing in the passcode that his senpai had so generously blurted out a while ago.

He instantly located the speed dial icon on the springboard and tapped it, thinking about hugging the air out of Uragami-kun the next time he saw him. Smart kid for having the foresight to teach them how to download and set this application up on their iPhones.

Was that kid psychic—?

Kamiki practically gulped at the name that appeared on the screen. For a moment he thought he might have done something wrong and the stupid smartphone was now dialing the wrong number...

But before he could figure out that he should well be cancelling the call now and fast, the other party had already answered after just two rings—

“Sho-chan! Where are you? I’ve been worried!”

So this guy was Speed Dial!

And he hadn’t been sleeping!

He wasn’t Manager-san, either. Or a girlfriend!

Hell, he wasn’t even a girl!

Now, how much stranger could this night get from here?
∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

This night had been a seemingly endless string of adult-like revelations for Ryunosuke Kamiki.

He had seen what alcohol could do to a man, what a man could do to himself, and how the most important person in a man’s life could actually turn out to be another man.

It only took Satoshi Ohno a quarter of an hour to get here and join them in their private space.

He watched in silent amusement as Arashi’s Leader gingerly tapped his bandmate’s shoulder in an attempt to wake him out of his drunken sleep. Sakurai-san barely even stirred. Just murmured something in annoyance while blindly slapping his bandmate’s hand away.

A light chuckle escaped Ohno-san’s throat, and the lilting sound calmed Kamiki somewhat. He still felt a little embarrassed though, and had actually began to say he would be going on his way when Ohno-san cut him off while carefully cradling his bandmate’s head in his lap.

“We’ll take you home,” he said, wiping the unsightly drool from off Sakurai-san’s lips with his thumb. “Sho-chan will nag my ears off if I let you by yourself.”

Kamiki crossed his arms over his chest and pointed out, “I’m twenty years old, Ohno-san.”

“I know. But you’re still a kid.” The man’s smile looked condescending.

“Like Sakurai-san is still a kid?” he quipped, just slightly annoyed.

Ohno-san chuckled again. “Well, yeah.” The man then bit his lip and looked at him, his brows just slightly creased with uncertainty. “I hope this doesn’t change your impression of him or anything.”

Kamiki smiled at the thought. Oh, it did change his impression, all right! But all of it for the better. Somehow seeing a vulnerable side to the man he had come to respect the most out of his drama co-stars, just endeared Sho Sakurai more to him.

He knew from the start that he wasn’t really looking up to a perfect senpai.

But seeing how this man could actually be man enough to allow himself to be weak and fall apart once in a while, his respect for him just increased. Weird, but true—

“I think I like this Sho Sakurai better.”

“I like him better this way too,” Ohno-san said, smiling affectionately at the man on his lap. “He looks best when he’s not trying too hard to be perfect.”

“You care about him.” It was a statement, an observation of what Kamiki already knew as fact. And he felt glad that he was surprisingly fine with it.

“I do,” came the unabashed reply.

“Then you have to tell him, Ohno-san,” Kamiki said, his tone just slightly pleading. “You have to tell him everyday.”

“Iyaaa~,” the man groaned, his face twisting into a grimace. “That’s embarrassing! Besides, he already knows that.”

Kamiki looked quietly at the man who seemed to be brushing something off from his partner’s cheek. A memory from a couple of weeks back flashed in his mind and he blurted out almost unconsciously, “You haven’t been watching the drama.”

He heard Ohno-san sigh and everything suddenly made sense to him. The brief look of disappointment that crossed Sakurai-san’s face when Kamiki had asked if Arashi-san was watching Kazoku Game.

And how a second later, as though he did not just feel down and all, his senpai had started laughing and said, “Satoshi-kun doesn’t really watch anything other than the fishing channel, so I doubt it.”

He hadn’t really thought it weird that Sho Sakurai singled out a particular member then.

He didn’t even realize that the man had called his bandmate by his first name.

Well, now he knew.

He knew a lot.

“He did a great job, you know.” He almost felt like scolding the man who had caused him this night.

“I know. I heard,” Ohno-san replied quietly, looking almost regretful as he kept his gaze on his partner.

Kamiki’s heart warmed up at the sight. “He needs to hear it from you.”

“But he knows that already.”

“He needs to know you know it, too.”

“What can I say that other people haven’t already said?”

Ohno-san looked and sounded lost. Kamiki met and held the man’s gaze and said, “Anything, Ohno-san. Really. Anything!” The confused look didn’t leave the man’s eyes so he added, “Everybody else’s words mean nothing, if he can’t hear them from you.”

A small smile appeared on Ohno-san’s lips as he began to understand. “That is totally childish, Sho-chan!” he mumbled as he lightly tapped his partner’s forehead.

Sho Sakurai merely groaned, curled up a little more snugly into his partner’s warm lap and just kept sleeping.

“Uragami-kun really said it best, ne?” Kamiki chuckled, completely moved by the sight before him. “Sensei’s really just a kid sometimes.”

Satoshi Ohno looked at him and said his gratitude ten times over with a single smile.

And knowing he had just done something good for these two men made his heart flutter with pride.

So this was how being an adult felt like...
∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Ten minutes later, Kamiki found himself barely holding on to consciousness on the passenger’s seat of the cab that was going to take him home.

His eyes fluttered open slightly when he caught a whiff of the two men’s hushed murmurings from the backseat.

“Sho-chan, otsukare!”

“Took you long enough. Ba~ka!”

The soft laughter that slipped past his senpai’s lips warmed Kamiki’s heart as he finally closed his eyes and let himself be lulled to sleep by the cab’s soothing vibrations.

Ii ne, Ohno-san. Ii ne...

Thank you! ^-^ ♥

I've only ever read one translated interview of Kamiki, and his answers seemed really adult-like, so it's always been my impression of him. And he looks like a nice kid too in his tv interviews. :)

While all I see of Yama are the adorable goofiness, lol. It's a pretty interesting contrast, ne? <3

It really distracted me almost out of my mind when I read that interview where Sho said he didn't think Ohno watched the drama. Then I stumbled upon Ohno saying in a different interview he doesn't really watch the other members' shows. It's always the fishing channel for him, I guess. xD

Oh, but you may be right. Perhaps watching Sho being all psycho is just too much for him to take.

Thank you! //hugs ^-^♥

Thank you! ^-^♥

I like trying to see Yama from many different perspectives. It's quite challenging.

And I want Ohno's number too! (don't we all?) xD <3

Oh God. I loved this, sincerely.
I love the tension that kept building up in the story because - from Kamiki's perspective - one wouldn't know who #1 on Sho's speed dial is. I felt like I was positively panicking with Kamiki.
Congratulations on a wonderful fic!
