I learned to let go, I travel in stillness
And I’ll remember
Happiness...”

It was raining when he finally had the courage to ask Ohno-san, for the first time, if he would ever consider a life together.

He didn’t really ask in so many words, but he had hoped the wanton kiss he pressed on his senpai’s drunken lips said enough.

Two weeks later, he saw Ohno-san just as wantonly kissing someone else. It was raining.

He didn’t cry. He didn’t even feel like he had to ask.

Life went on like nothing ever happened between them.

In not so many words, Ohno-san broke his heart.

Sho knew then, he had his answer.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

It wasn’t raining the first time Ohno-kun invited him out to drink.

He just turned twenty and his senpai was so vibrantly persistent that saying ‘no’ would’ve been a crime.

He didn’t even mind paying for everything when Ohno-kun drunk himself to a stupor.

He didn’t mind paying for a hotel room because he didn’t know where else to go.

He was going to call their moms, was going to do a lot of other responsible things.

But when Ohno-kun embraced him and filled his ears with inebriated pleas to stay, he forgot everything else.

Outside, it began to rain.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Seeing his swollen face devastated him, instantly scrubbing off his confidence.

He certainly didn’t need anybody dropping by to see him suffer.

“I thought you had your teeth removed?” Ohno looked worried, confused.

“I did,” he mumbled through the pain, the intrusion making him gloomier. “How’d you even get here, Ohno-kun?”

Ohno shrugged and settled beside him on the couch. “Manager-san’s outside. Are you all right, Sho-kun?”

“I look awful.”

Ohno’s gaze fixed on him long enough to make his face swell even more. “You do.”

Those words hit Sho’s heart like cloudburst—

“But I like you all the same.”

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Ohno took him out to dinner and drinks a week after his graduation rites.

This time, the older man had no reason to soak himself up in alcohol. Ohno looked genuinely proud of him, and it was enough to complete Sho.

“I never really thought we’d be this close. I mean, what are the odds of Satoshi Ohno being friends with a Sho Sakurai, huh?”

“I’m nothing special, Leader.”

Several months later, they met each other at a summer festival amidst thousands of people.

It was then that they stopped thinking about the odds, and began building trust in fate.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

He could not remember the first time he called the man ‘Satoshi-kun’, just that he was stunned when he realized it two weeks after ‘West Side Story’ opened.

Ohno didn’t seem to mind. Or maybe he had yet to notice it himself—

“Ohno-kun...”

Just as he hadn’t been responding to Sho for the past minute—

“OHNO-KUN!”

“I liked the way you called me the first time.” Ohno scrunched his face up in a pout.

It took a beat for Sho to catch on, roll his eyes and say, “Satoshi-kun...”

Ohno finally smiled. “Yes, Sho-kun?”

His name had never sounded better.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Writing the song together was his idea. He didn’t know what came over him either.

At least, it wasn’t something he would openly tell the older man.

“Why d’you have to write about that?!” Sho’s ears burned with embarrassment.

Satoshi smirked and held his notes away. “Why not? It’s true.”

“You were watching it, too!” Sho attempted to grab the man’s wrist again.

Satoshi decided to sit on his notes. “You got me curious.”

“Satoshi-kun, please...”

“People will think it’s funny.”

“People will think I’m a virgin!”

“We both know you’re not...”

It was raining outside and they hardly noticed.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Whatever it was they had together was never clear. Sho knew this and didn’t care.

For whatever bit of manly pride he had left was always so easily crushed by Satoshi’s uncharacteristic dominance in their own private space.

It hardly mattered whether they were or weren’t together. With Satoshi buried deep inside him and his name trickling from the man’s lips in a progressive stream of ecstasy, all Sho could do was bite his own lips through each bone-racking thrust, finding his own bliss in the knowledge that this was enough.

Everything that made Satoshi happy had always been enough.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

It was drizzling when the truth returned to trample his heart—

“I’m sorry, Sho-kun...”

The bile in his throat almost choked him. “It’s okay. I’m fine.”

Satoshi found his happiness in someone else.

Sho found comfort in never letting go.

He went back to calling him ‘Ohno-san’, reveling at how it made the man flinch.

‘Ohno-kun’ came back shortly in a false attempt to show the man he had moved on.

“I miss you, Sho-cha~n...”

It only took a late night call that reeked of despair to break through his lie—

He was calling him ‘Satoshi-kun’ the very next day.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

His balcony held many memories of them being together, being themselves.

It had always been a pleasant surprise what a cup of tea and a few hours of tenth-floor air could do to his man—

“We’ve known each other for more than half our lives. That should mean something, ne Sho-chan?”

“It means we’re getting old.”

“Why do you always have to be so negative?”

“What else could it mean, then?”

Satoshi sighed into his cup. “I wouldn’t mind growing old here.”

Sho’s heart smiled at the unspoken promise. “You are already old.”

“Dying here wouldn’t be so bad either...”

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

It had never really bothered them until they were driven into a corner and had nowhere else to go.

Rumors were tricky like that. And the closet was shrinking in on them.

Satoshi made the decision. Julie-san was too old to even try arguing with the stubborn man.

Sho held his breath and steeled himself against another heartbreak.

“It’s true.”

A collective gasp—

“All of it.”

A frenzied overlapping of questions—

“I regret nothing.”

Sho had never expected the man to come out, not for his sake.

“I’ve made my choice, Sho-chan. Don’t let me regret it.”

They never did.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

Looking back at how their lives had crossed, twisted, strayed and intertwined over again kept them amused through their idle days.

They laughed, fell into reflective silence. Cried and laughed again as they reached out for each other’s hands.

Both still marveling at how fate always seemed to be working on their side—

“Can we go to that festival again this year, Sho-chan?” Satoshi’s tired lips trembled in a smile.

Sho traced the familiar veins on the now wrinkled hand, tears blurring his vision. “Of course, Satoshi-kun.”

“You’ll go even without me, right...?”

Satoshi never even made it to summer.

∞•∞•∞•∞•∞

This balcony holds many precious memories of them together, young and alive.

Even in old age, they would always come here with their cups of warm tea, basking in the sights and sounds of tenth-floor lodging, celebrating their lives.

Sho finds comfort out here. Oftentimes falling asleep in his lounge chair and waking up to the rain kissing his face.

It never fails to make him smile through his tears, turning to the empty chair beside him and whispering, “I miss you too, Satoshi-kun...”

They had grown old together right here, after all—

Dying here wouldn’t be too bad either...

I never knew who that person was either, just that there were more than one. I wanted to show Ohno's reluctance to embrace his feelings for Sho by constantly hooking up with someone else, until he finally realizes he can never live life without Sho by his side. <3

And you're right. In the end, it didn't really matter, so I stopped wondering myself. :)

Fate is a wonderful thing, ne. I'm sure they both realize that as well, that's why they can never forget that fateful Tenjin meet up and are even talking about it until now, and hopefully until they grow old. <3

Thank you very much! //hugs tighter <3<3<3
