rainbowfilling to fill my JUN/AIBA FREE SQUARE. Inspired by an article in Wink Up June 2013 about handling Arashi members.
“I’m home!”
Jun barely moved from his seat, didn’t even bother raising his head, as his partner practically bounced into the living room, threw his sling bag into an armchair and hurled himself on the couch beside him.
“I’m home,” Masaki said again, hesitating only for a moment before leaning in and pressing a light kiss on his cheek. “Jun-kun...?”
Jun pursed his lips and hummed, his eyes focused on the book in his hand. It was an off-day for him and he had spent most of it lost in the pages of the book Junichi Okada had given Sho several months ago on one of their variety show recordings, and which his bandmate had gladly lent to him because, “Sho Sakurai hardly has time to read these days.”
That man did sometimes playfully refer to himself in third person like he was a primary school boy. Jun did sometimes find it amusing how Sho could annoy him even more than his naturally airheaded partner always did.
“Hey, you’re almost done with this, huh.” Masaki flipped through the pages that Jun had already read, obviously leaving all sense of ‘personal space’ at the door. “So cool! How is it? What is it about?”
Jun clucked his tongue and pulled the book away from his partner’s hand. “Can’t you see I’m still reading it?”
Masaki chuckled nervously. “Right. Hmm... I’ll ask you later, I guess.”
Jun sighed, pushed his glasses up his nose and went back to reading.
Or he tried to anyway, what with Masaki brushing up against him, the man’s eyes squinting as he read along under his breath, “How do you read this again? Hm... Hm... Ah, it doesn’t matter—!”
It took everything Jun had not to scream and kick his partner out of the house. “I would really like to finish this tonight, Masaki.”
“Of course!” Masaki’s cheerful retort sounded tense. He leaned on the couch and took his phone out to fiddle with it, scrolling through his unread messages while his thoughts spilled out—loudly—all over the place. “Nino’s finally got that new game he wanted! Oh wait, he bought it for me?! That guy, seriously! He’s been draining my money like we’re married or something! I’d ask Jun-kun’s advice, but he’s caught on something right now...”
Jun saw his partner steal a glance at him and tried his utmost best to ignore it.
“Ah, Leader has finally taken Sho-chan to meet his pet lizard! I’ll show Jun-kun this photo when he’s done reading. Sho-chan seriously looks hilarious here...”
Jun felt a nerve in his temple throb. Did he say there was somebody else who annoyed him more than Masaki Aiba ever did? He was lying.
“Eh? Why is Tohma-kun mailing me like we haven’t just spent the whole day together? That guy is seriously weird! Of course I won’t forget filming tomorrow. I’m not that old! Besides I have Jun-kun to remind me, so it’s okay.”
Jun raised a twitching brow, wondering whether it’s really for the better that Masaki was no longer shy around him like he was with other people. At least, not-shy enough to deliberately grate at his nerves like this.
“Hm... Kazama-pon wants to go out drinking. I should probably go and leave Jun-kun to his book. Hmmm? Should I ask Jun-kun for permission first? He looks really busy—”
Jun growled faintly and turned to his partner. “Don’t you have work tomorrow?”
“Ah, Jun-kun, you’re right!” Masaki said like he had just remembered—both tomorrow’s schedule and the fact that ‘Jun-kun’ was sitting right beside him. “I’ll just mail Kazama-pon ‘no’ then. I can go next time, right? Jun-kun can probably go with me then, too...” He tapped on his phone with both thumbs, mouthing out the words as he typed them.
Jun rolled his eyes and slouched wearily on his seat. “Seriously...”
“Ja!” Masaki laid his phone on the coffee table. “I’m off to take a bath now!”
Jun slapped a hand to his forehead. “Please, just go!”
The muffled sounds of the shower and Masaki’s half-assed bathroom singing were strangely comforting. Jun actually managed to move through a considerable number of pages before he realized that something was suddenly amiss.
The silence. It was deafening.
He looked at his watch and noted that it had been more than half an hour since Masaki went into the bathroom.
Jun’s breath hitched instantly. Masaki never took more than ten minutes in the bathroom...
Unless he decided to soak in the tub tonight...
Which wouldn’t have been such a bad idea after a long day at work...
Except that it’s Masaki Aiba...
“Are you kidding me?” Jun snarled under his breath. He threw his book aside and bolted for the bathroom in a panic.
And sure enough, he opened the door to the sight of his partner dozing off in the bathtub. Not for the first time, of course, but it was one of those things that got more troublesome the closer it was to becoming a habit.
Masaki actually seemed comfortable and was even snoring softly through his carelessly opened mouth. He looked so funny and vulnerable that Jun could not help but smile. “Idiot...”
“Oi...” He gave Masaki’s forehead a loving but forceful tap, then hauled the half-conscious heap of a man out of the water as soon as Masaki opened his eyes and started mumbling excuses.
Jun pulled a fluffy towel from the rack and dried Masaki up as best as he could while trying to keep the man from sprawling on the tiled floor.
Masaki kept babbling all the way to the bedroom, with Jun patiently guiding his every step and pulling him up firmly at the waist with every misstep. He hardly made sense at all, but that was hardly any different from normal.
Jun helped Masaki into the pajama set he had already laid out on the bed earlier, tucked the man in like an innocent little boy already lost in dreamland, and for some reason thought it best to stay for a while and just marvel at the sight of his partner for the first time that night.
It did not even take him a second to lose himself in that sort of trance that made men see nothing but the beauty beyond the most glaring imperfections.
Not that Masaki had any, now that he thought about it. There were just the tired circles under his eyes that did not really take much away.
Jun hadn’t even realized when he crouched on the edge of the bed and began thumbing the mole on his partner’s right cheek. He just found himself there, his heart thrilling at the shy dimple that appeared when the man giggled in his sleep, “That tickles...”
Sometimes, when Masaki was awake, it’s easy to get distracted by his silly antics.
But like this, when his eyes were closed and his mind wasn’t caught in a whirlwind of the craziest, dumbest, and most ridiculous thought processes, it’s easier to remember the beautiful man behind the bullied character.
And Jun just could not help but fall for him all over again.
“Jun-pon, daisuki...” Masaki mumbled, as though sensing his thoughts.
It suddenly did not matter that he still had some ten pages left to read in that book.
He quickly changed into dry clothes and went around to turn the lights off all over the house before slipping under the blanket and gathering his partner into his arms.
Masaki readily snuggled up to him, breathing a sleepy, “I’m home,” into his neck.
Jun pressed a kiss on his partner’s forehead and whispered, “I’m glad you’re back...” before taking his glasses off and closing his eyes to sleep.
