Satoshi didn’t think those eyes could get any larger. Or rounder.
Then again, he also didn’t think he and Sho could be any more than bandmates before, and yet look where they are now—
Standing right here, on each side of a magical view that could not, in any way, rival what has already caught his unwavering sights for good. For-ever.
Right where they had never expected to be ten years from their fated meeting at that summer festival in Osaka. An incident that they would still sometimes joke about, remember fondly, on and off the record.
Here. Together. Two hearts. One house—
Sho averts his eyes. A shy gesture that would’ve looked adorable on a sixteen-year-old girl, but is, for some strange reason, also majestic on this thirty-two-year-old man.
Especially with all the water ferns and wiggly little fishes framing it.
Satoshi has already stopped wondering how this could even be possible.
Then again, it’s him. It’s them.
And there’s absolutely nothing that Sho Sakurai does with his face that can ever feel wrong to Satoshi Ohno.
He may still have qualms about finally giving in to his partner’s rather simple request for their anniversary. But seeing Sho’s child-like expressions of awe and delight, along with the generous sputterings of “Ooohs” and “Aaaahs”, the lilting giggles at the whimsical ways of their new aquatic housemates, and all other things that excited little boys would do at the sight of a 50-gallon fish tank, are all seriously melting his heart and gradually making him blind to the mess that is their living room right now (and the warzone that is their bedroom), all because the younger man has been putting off his clean-up duties since a week ago.
Or two.
Satoshi has already lost count.
“Come on...” Sho murmurs, tapping on the glass to coax a boxfish out of the tiny stone house in the corner. “Go out and play, you...” He makes the mistake of looking up again and meeting Satoshi’s unblinking gaze. Even topping it off with the faintest hint of a blush, a teasing smirk in one corner of those naturally, sinfully erotic lips...
The fishes are so quickly forgotten, only existing now in the fading edges of Satoshi’s mesmerized vision.
He feels like it’s the first time he’s seeing his partner this up close and yet so frustratingly untouchable.
Raw and unfiltered yet literally larger than life.
But also entirely here and all his to take, so...
Satoshi’s forehead hits the glass before he can even blink. His aristocratic nose and puckered lips pressed hard and flat like a trampled strawberry pancake on the cold transparent surface.
Sho laughs like he’s never seen anything funnier.
Satoshi pulls back and flushes like he’s never done anything stupider.
Then laughs like he’ll willingly do it over for his partner’s amusement, if it means the younger man can laugh at him like that again.
Like there’s no one else who can make Sho Sakurai happier, even in the ten more years to follow—
I love you, his partner mouths from the other side of the fish tank, looking very much like an aquatic royalty with all the dancing ferns and colorful fishes framing his face.
Ditto, Satoshi breathes against the glass, hoping he looks just as majestic to warrant his eternal claim on Sho’s heart.
It’s true that cleaning up the fish tank regularly is an added chore that he’s more than likely to take on.
But it’s him. And it’s them.
And there’s nothing that Sho Sakurai could ever want that would ever feel wrong to Satoshi Ohno.
***This lovely scene still gives me the shivers. Does that mean I’ve got at least a quarter of my romantic, cheese-encrusted bone still intact? Maybe not. :3
