"Have you ever made a wish on a dandelion?” Sho asked, his fascinated gaze fixed on the whitish puffball at the end of the stalk he had been twirling between his fingers.
Satoshi looked at the one in his own hand, held at eye level close to his nose. “No,” he said. He had lived in Waku Waku all his life, but this was the first time he had ever seen this weird looking flower up close. He was sure he had seen them around in passing, though. They had been sprouting out all over the field at the back of the orphanage, after all. The one that Old Man Joshima had been tilling since he could remember. “How does it work?”
“They say,” Sho began, his gaze still unwavering, “that if you whisper your wish to a dandelion, and you blow on it, and all the puffs fly away, your wish will be granted.”
“Oh.” He frowned as a puff from his dandelion fell on his lap. Such a fragile little thing, really. “How’s that even possible?”
Sho tilted his head back to the sky, sighing in feigned upset. “You really don’t know much, do you?”
“Well, I know we’ll be in trouble if Old Man Joshima sees us here.” They were on top of a small hill at one corner of the field that’s already teasing the boundaries of Waku Waku. “And he’s gonna tell Hatori-san we’re trying to run away—”
“—and that big baby’s gonna cry again!” They hollered out together, snorting in boyish delight.
A cool, afternoon breeze suddenly swept by, turning their puffballs bald in an instant, their minds suspended in mutual surprise. A dandelion storm rose from the field, swirling and dancing around them in an upward stream of white puffs and dreams.
“Oh crap!” Sho squeaked, trying to keep up with a frown that was already half lost in a smile.
“It’s okay, Sho-chan.” Satoshi reached out for his friend’s hand, a boldness stirred by Nature’s spunk. “I’ve already made a wish. I guess Nature’s just claiming her puffs.”
Sho narrowed his eyes and pouted. “What did you wish for, Satoshi-kun?”
Satoshi turned to him, grinned and squeezed his hand. “You.”
