Satoshi had no shadow.

Sho would never have noticed this if Kazunari had not pointed it out. And he would never have believed his former roommate’s claim if he hadn’t just seen it for himself.

Because the best, and probably also the worst, thing about Kazunari was that he just drew you in, despite his unbiased mischief and the compulsive lies he told people when he would really rather nod his head than bother explaining himself.

In his first couple of months here, Sho believed that Kazunari and Ryo from the room next to theirs were brothers, because he had stupidly made the assumption when he noticed how Ryo had been following Kazunari around, and Kazunari himself did not even bother straightening him up.

Ryo seemed to have already outgrown this habit, but Sho would forever remember Kazunari’s unintentional treachery.

The boy’s lies were harmless, though. Or at least, mostly so. Except for when he’d get a rather menacing urge to trick Sho into embarrassing himself in front of everyone else, if not sneakily chasing him headlong into a potentially paralyzing injury; or, on the worst of days, even to the very edges of death (those habaneros almost sent him reeling into the River Styx!).

If he didn’t know any better, Sho would seriously think Kazunari hated him. Hated him with as much wicked intensity as could sink a hundred ships without any of the ships’ captains realizing that they’re sinking until they found themselves suddenly swimming alongside sharks.

But the Kazunari who shared the room with him at night back then was an entirely different boy, who would insist on sleeping on the same bed with him, underneath the same blanket, and all wrapped up like a helpless, hapless, overgrown toddler in his arms.

At such times, Kazunari would awaken a part of him that he couldn’t quite put a finger on. All he knew then and all he knew now was that if it ever came down to it, he would step up and protect this boy, whatever it took. Even if it meant going up against Satoshi—

But then he’d just as quickly get distracted from those strange feelings as soon as the bratty version of Kazunari that everybody else knew deliberately stuck a foot out to trip him in class. Or in the mess hall. Or anywhere else that their paths would happen to cross.

On rare occasions though, like today, they could also just sit back and enjoy a decent conversation with each other.

Because aside from trying to break his bones, Kazunari also loved to tell stories. Of monsters and swordsmen and dragons that either huffed and puffed fire or twirled and turned into the prettiest maidens of old.

He had a particular fondness for pirates and would often be caught in an impromptu staging of ‘The Greatest Pirate Adventure Ever Told’ with some of the kids in Waku Waku.

Sho had never understood the significance of such a title, though. What was the point of calling it ‘greatest’ when every month there was a new adventure that’s supposedly greater than the last—?

“Stop spoiling things with your stupid questions, Sho-chan! Of course, you always have to keep striving for something better even when you think you’ve already done your best. Didn’t your Papa ever teach you that?”

He had had half the mind to deck Kazunari’s face then and snarl, “I never had a Papa!” But because the kid had looked so smug and somewhat accomplished to have shared that nugget of wisdom from his father with everyone, Sho had kept himself back from creating a scene, even when he felt like Kazunari’s glorious moment had just been paid for with his pride.

There was also the fact that Satoshi had just grabbed his hand and gave it a calming squeeze, making him feel like he could forgive anything in an instant—

Because like Kazunari, Satoshi just drew people in, too. But for Sho, it had always been for an entirely different reason.

If Kazunari was someone he felt like he needed to protect, Satoshi was the complete polar opposite—

Or at least, he used to be.

These past couple of days had drastically changed the way Sho saw Satoshi.

But what’s even more worrying was that, it had not at all affected the way he felt for the peculiar boy.

Satoshi scared him now. And yet, the way his entire being reacted to the slightest brush of skin, the smallest hint of a smile that’s entirely meant for him, was still the same, if not slightly more consuming.

Maybe finding out that the boy had no shadow was exactly what he needed to finally change his mind—

“I can’t believe you haven’t noticed it before, Sho-chan,” Kazunari kept saying, his voice low and conspiratorial, which might’ve sounded seriously funny coming from under his red cap with the furry balls on top and a pair of uneven eyes that seemed to mock Sho for a different reason each time. “I know you can be pretty dense sometimes, but I also know you’re smart. And Oh-chan’s been spending so much time with you, I would have seriously tired of you if I were him.”

“Charming,” he grumbled, narrowing his eyes at Satoshi across the yard, and yet feeling all the hatred in his chest spilling over for the brat beside him. “Why doesn’t he have it then?”

Kazunari shrugged. “Nobody else has it. Except you.”

“What?” Sho’s gaze abruptly dropped to the ground, to the faint outline of a single shadow where there’s supposed to be two. “Huh!” He leaned slowly to one side to check if the one shadow he’s seeing was really his, or it’s just the tree behind them fooling him somehow. The shadow moved along to perfectly match his every movement. “Huh!” He must’ve really been stupid if he had not even noticed this part of him before.

“You’re different, Sho-chan. Different from us.” Kazunari’s voice was barely above a whisper now, head bent low to hide his face behind the wide brim of his cap. “Maybe that’s why you remember that boy. Maybe remembering why you’re here is all the chance you have of getting yourself out.”

Sho’s heart literally froze in that short moment it took for him to turn to Kazunari, and for Kazunari to meet his eyes and say, “You have got to remember...”

This was all the thought that filled his mind for the rest of the day...

And for every other day that came before he finally found a way out of Waku Waku.

Hello, I wanted to let you know that your LJ is one that is being stolen from by the person running http://fanfic-journal.com/

Despite multiple people telling them they have no right under CCL to steal our intellectual property, they refuse to stop. Right now, as me and others dig for the proper way to shut them down, we can only warn people they've stolen from and let you know that you can complain, and they seem to be removing entries. This person actually said to me in response to me saying what they were doing was wrong:

“and why not? Until they explicit deny it, i have all right to do anything. Its basic freedom rights of peoples. If you dont want to you fanfic been read or copied, dont make it public.”

They then edited that comment because CLEARLY they know they’re in the wrong, but I’ve got the email in case anyone wants a screencap. The thing is, they aren’t going to stop.

If you wish to complain you can go here:

http://fanfic-journal.com/complain-here/

Be clear because they are slimy. Request they delete all your entries and never copy any more.

Best wishes, and sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
